  Web-based DMS for Motorola

  

  Motorola's SURFboard wireless cable modem incorporates gateway, firewall, VPN, and WEP security features. Art & Logic developed an API which allowed cable service providers to customize the interface at runtime, selectively hiding and showing content and changing fields to read/write or read-only. The interface was integrated with a customized version of the GoAhead Webserver and Art & Logic's own Device Management Framework.

• Measuring Freeway Road Traffic from the Skies

  

  Skycomp wanted to replace the need to print out 1000's of traffic survey pictures so that "counters" could scan through the pictures and count vehicles, marking each picture with a grease pencil. A flash application was built to load the images in a viewer area with marking tools to replace the grease pencil. Different types of vehicles were marked with different symbols. more...

  Skycomp wanted to replace the need to print out 1000's of traffic survey pictures so that "counters" could scan through the pictures and count vehicles, marking each picture with a grease pencil. A flash application was built to load the images in a viewer area with marking tools to replace the grease pencil. Different types of vehicles were marked with different symbols. Line tools were available to mark the stop and end of each count region. Comments could be assigned to each picture. The view area positioned images end to end to present a filmstrip style display. A thumbnail strip was available across the bottom of the screen to easily navigate to a specific image. All annotations were stored in a file that could be emailed back to Skycomp, enabling them to outsource the counting effort. The annotation file could be copied into a directory containing the same survey images, enabling a Skycomp administrator to replicate the results entered by the offsite "counter".

  Art & Logic developed PAN Manager™, a web based management system for Egenera's Processing Area Network. Egenera's customers are able to provision, configure, allocate, monitor, and control clusters of servers entirely from a web browser. The management software is built with Java, running on Red Hat Linux with custom kernel modifications. Each hardware system component runs Java agents which cooperate to manage the system. The user interface is built with JSP and Java servlets on the Struts framework, which implements the Model- View-Controller design pattern to separate logic from presentation. JavaScript on the client side handles dynamic display of status data, as well as display and control functionality.

  Vantage Point Media hired Art & Logic to create an interactive Flash application to allow visitors to their site configure the Evo Wall System product. The Evo Wall System consists of mounting hardware, horizontal and vertical mounting rails, decorative tiles, shelves, white boards, chalk boards, and numerous other options to be released to market. WallCustomizer is a Flash application with a sliding list of Evo System components represented as thumbnail images. User select a tiles which are placed on the wall by the application. Colors, wood grains, textures, etc can be selected by the user. Components may be dragged from a sliding list and placed on the grid. In addition to the Evo System components users can also select items such as flat panel TVs, DVD players, speakers, etc. and place them on the wall grid. When satisfied they can save the design and print out a shopping list of components required to construct the layout. In addition to the Flash front end, A&L also produced a web admin interface for maintaining the components in a MySQL database that were accessible to the Flash application.

  Art & Logic developed a suite of web applications that provides Harcourt's Reading and Math Assessment Tests to elementary school students across the country via the internet. The applications enable school superintendents to create Teacher accounts, who in turn can create Student accounts, create classroom groups, assign tests to students either as a group or as part of their individual development plans. Students log onto the system, take tests, and view test results instantaneously. Teachers and Supervisors can view reports to gauge how students are performing against state benchmarks. A separate offline application was developed for importing XML content into the backend database. iloli™ applications have delivered millions of online assessments to hundreds of thousands of primary and secondary school students in the United States. The iloli framework implements Harcourt's HSPOA and READS product lines. Following the completion of the original application for Harcourt Interactive Technology (HIT), the Harcourt Education and Measurement (HEM) group hired Art & Logic to modify the original application for use with their testing products. Unlike HSPOA and READS, which are assessment practice tools, the SDRT/SDMT product is a "high stakes" test administered to students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Now it needed a configuration and management interface that network providers could actually use. Having heard through about the work that Art & Logic was doing for other networking product companies, Redback hired Art & Logic to create the SMS 1000 product's management interface. Since then Redback has grown from a startup into a highly respected public company, while continuing to work with Art & Logic on several new products. The original codebase, including the Art & Logic Advanced JavaScript Control Suite and some tricky searching, sorting, and filtering software, has sped development of the rest of Redback's product line. Because of the complexity of the SMS products they became a showcase of embedded internet capabilities. For example, the device interface can show which plugin cards are in which device slots and can defer committing a large set of cached configuration changes to eliminate conflicts.

  This large public web site is one of the most popular web sites in the world, receiving millions of hits per day. Art & Logic developed all the back-end code (PHP), including database (MySQL), administrative tools, reports, and a custom content management system. Given the enormous load on the site, the key challenges were to develop a system that could handle this much traffic while also providing the flexibility for Oakley to update the site frequently. There's quite a bit of complex business logic that's not immediately apparent from looking at the site. For example, specials on sunglasses in Australia occur at a different time of the year than specials here in the U.S., because of the opposite seasons in the southern hemisphere.
