Open Source
For many years, Art & Logic has been using Open Source software as a platform for building our clients’ applications. We are experts at creating web applications using the following technologies:
- PHP, including Drupal
- Ruby, including Ruby on Rails
- Python, including Django and TurboGears
- MySQL
- PostgreSQL
- Apache
- GNU/Linux
- Our pre-built, PHP-based content management system.

Free as in Freedom (and lower risk)
When Open Source developers talk about “free software” they are referring to freedom, not price. Put simply, Open Source software allows anyone to inspect and improve the source code. This process has resulted in highly reliable, secure, high-performance platforms on which to build web applications.
Choosing an Open Source platform for your application can lower your overall technology risk and reduce the cost of development and long-term maintenance. While independent software vendors are motivated primarily to generate a profit, Open Source developers tend to focus only on computing problems. Open Source software generally complies with industry standards and doesn’t carry the risk of “vendor lock-in” and forced upgrades by software vendors.
Throughout the last ten years, the Open Source developer community has produced many of the most trusted building blocks of the web. Apache, the Open Source web server, is used on two-thirds of all web sites. PHP, though a non-commercial product, is used on over 14 million web sites and is more popular than Microsoft’s competing solution.
Art & Logic recognizes that Open Source isn’t always the best solution. Contact us to talk about your project. We take a flexible approach to technology decisions by recommending Microsoft, Java, Oracle, WebObjects, and Open Source solutions on a case-by-case basis.
Our Role in the Open Source Community
Art & Logic is the official maintainer of the GoAhead WebServer project. GoAhead WebServer is the world’s most popular “embedded web server” and is used to build web-based control panels for low-power devices such as cable modems, PDA’s, and printers.

Web Standards & Accessibility
Art & Logic’s web applications conform to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C.org) standards, ensuring interoperability with current and future web technologies. Our applications comply with government accessibility laws such as Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act as needed.
Long-Term Technology Relationships
Art & Logic takes a flexible, long-term approach to technology and design decisions. We use our knowledge of most major software technologies to help you choose the best platform for your application. If the right tools don’t exist, we can build them from scratch or assemble pre-existing components.
Of course, your long-term support plans, existing systems, schedule, and budget weigh heavily into these decisions. We take the time to get to know our clients and the business requirements for their software.
